Katushika Hokusai (1760- 1849)
Hokusai was an inspired painter as well as a famous woodblock print artist. this sumi-e, (or ink painting) image titled "Dragon flying over Mt. Fuji" is particularly poignant as one of Hokusai's last works. A dragon rising over sacred Mt. Fuji Symbolized success in life.
Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839 - 1892)
Yoshitoshi was one of the most popular woodblock print (ukiyo-e) artists of Japan's Meiji period (1868-1912). In this print Summer: Women Bathing at the Daishoro he portrays courtesans of the elegant pleasure house of Daishoro in Edo. Yoshitoshi was a frequent visitor to this establishiment in the early 1880's, when he made this print
What is ukiyo-e
In Japanese, the characters for Floating World are read ukiyo. Thus, in these sources the compound term Ukiyo-e is translated as: " pictures, paintings or illustrations of the Floating World." It is with this meaning that the term has come to be used in everything from popular coffee-table books to scholarly works of literature, history, and art. Insofar as this Japanese word can be said to have entered the English vocabulary, it has done so with this meaning.
